Romain's experience:

‘You have to go to the immigration department at first and then to the tax department to get paid.’

Never speak negatively about the king or the royal family.

Never compare Norway to Sweden out loud. You'll become public enemy number 1.

Alcohol can only be bought in state-run shops and is very expensive. And no beer after 8pm on weekdays, or 6pm on Saturdays!

A must-have

A Black Card to buy all the alcohol you need to make an EMOTR.

Attention

If you're really sensitive to the cold
don't go to this country.

Transport

By train (NSB): comfortable and sliding scale fares: the longer the journey, the less you pay!

By bus: numerous and complementary to the trains:
- Nor-Way Bussekspress: operates from Kristiansand to Trondheim, as far as the North Cape.
- Boreal: serves the whole of Finnmark

By air: 45 airports throughout the country.
Domestic flights are operated by the national airline SAS, but also by Norwegian, Widerøe and other small local airlines...

  • Nice neighbourhoods: Aker Brygge, Grünerløkka, Tjuvholmen

  • Neighbourhoods to avoid: Norway remains a safe country, but if you had to think twice about moving to certain areas, it would be Grønland and Tøyen.

  • Rent budget: around NOK 6,000 (€530) per month for a shared room.

Accommodation

Climate
  • From April onwards, the days get longer as the summer solstice approaches, and the midnight sun can only be seen above the Arctic Circle.

  •  From September onwards, night takes over: around Christmas, there are 3 to 4 hours of light equivalent to a rainy day in France. However, the aurora borealis and the white of the snow help to brighten up the landscape.

Vaccine

Make sure you are up to date with the recommended vaccinations, such as those against hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever and routine vaccinations.

Clothing
  • In summer: warm clothing, waterproof footwear, a windbreaker and a swimming costume.

  • In winter: layers of clothing and warm, hard-wearing footwear.

Memory
  • a Lusekofte (Norwegian woollen jumper) or a Helle knife (Norwegian pocket knife)
